Aelita: Queen of Mars (Аэлита) | Dir. Yakov Protazanov | Russia | 1924 | 111 min |
Released in 1924, Aelita: Queen of Mars is known as the first feature-length film about space travel. Soviet filmmaker Yakov Protazanov directed this highly influential silent film, whose luscious sets and costumes influenced Sci-Fi classics such as Flight to Mars or Metropolis. Next to the dramatic struggle of a group of people in 1920’s Russia, the plot focuses on a young man’s flight to Mars on a rocket ship, where he ends up leading a proletarian uprising with the support of Queen Aelita who has fallen in love with him after watching him through a telescope.
