As part of our regular program at Goethe Institute Amsterdam another silent cinema masterpiece will be screened with a new electro-acoustic score by cutting-edge sound artists. This time we have invited the talented indietronica duo LUMISOKEA to compose an atmospheric and throbbing score for Murnau's classic tale of the alchemist Faust's pact with the devil.
Dir. F. W. Murnau With Emil Jannings, Gosta Ekman, Camilla Horn. D - 1926 - 114 min
Struggling with his faith amidst a devastating plague, the alchemist Faust (Gösta Ekman) is offered the power to cure and the gift of youth by the diabolical Mephisto (Emil Jannings). The price requested by Mephisto in exchange for these gifts is the alchemist's own soul..
F.W. Murnau's dazzling adaptation of Goethe’s classic tale Faust ranks alongside Metropolis as the most extraordinary achievement in the history of German silent cinema. One of the first 'blockbusters' ever produced, FAUST remains one of the most visually magnificent films of the silent era (and well beyond). Produced amidst colossal film sets and with the use of groundbreaking special effects, this timeless classic never ceased to amaze and inspire audiences around the world from the moment of its release, nearly 90 years ago.
FAUST will be presented with a new electro-acoustic score composed and preformed live by:
LUMISOKEA (Eat Conrete)
Lumisokea is a Belgian-Italian duo, formed by Koenraad Ecker and Andrea Taeggi. Their music is at once highly physical and rich in texture, using both acoustic (cello, prepared piano) as well as (analog) electronic instruments to create a dark and introspective listening experience. Lumisokea set out to build sonic landscapes that are both minimalistic yet highly rich in texture and atmosphere, covering a broad spectrum, going from ambient to noise and prepared piano to heavy bass beats (as if you were listening to John Cage's 'Piano Sonatas' while a dubstep rave is going on next door), still remaining completely focused on their signature sound.
On november 15th 2012 Lumisokea will release their second album on Eat Concrete, entitled “Selva”, following their successful debut album “Automatons” (2011).
