One of the last silent films produced in Germany, this stunning melodrama offers a unique look at urban life in the 20s through sumptuous film sets and extraordinary cinematic moments. A traffic cop arrests a gorgeous thief and must escort her to the police station. Her only chance for escape is by seducing him. “Asphalt reveals a filmmaker of astonishing technical skills and a distinctive visual style, based on a use of raked sets to create a sense of precariousness and claustrophobia." Dave Kehr, The New York Times
